A tension rod wedged inside a window frame holding a curtain panel

How to hang curtains without drilling

Three renter-safe ways to hang curtain panels — tension rods, clamp-on brackets, and adhesive hooks — and the honest limits of each.

No drill, no landlord negotiation, no patching holes when you move out. Three approaches, in order of how much weight they can honestly carry.

Use a tension rod inside the frame

A spring-loaded rod wedges between the inside faces of the window frame — no hardware at all. It's the cleanest no-drill option and the natural partner for café curtains, sidelights, and single panels on narrow windows. The limit is weight and width: tension rods hold light-to-medium panels over modest spans. A heavy lined blackout panel on a wide tension rod will walk its way down the frame.

Clamp brackets onto the window trim

Twist-tight or spring-clamp rod brackets grip the top window casing and hold a standard rod in front of it. No holes, and meaningfully more capacity than adhesive — this is usually the best no-drill route for full-size panels. It requires one thing your window may not have: protruding top trim for the clamp to bite. Flat drywall returns rule this one out.

Hang adhesive hooks

Heavy-duty adhesive hooks (the strippable-backing kind) placed above the window can carry a lightweight rod and panel. Follow the weight rating on the package, use more hooks than you think you need, and give the adhesive its full cure time before hanging anything. Best for sheers and light filtering panels; treat any lined or blackout panel as over budget for adhesive.

Match the panel to the method

The honest summary: no-drill methods trade capacity for convenience, so let the mounting choose the fabric. Tension rod or adhesive → lighter, unlined panels. Clamp brackets → most standard panels. If your heart is set on heavy blackout for sleep, that's the one case where two drilled brackets are worth the conversation with the landlord.
